Ever since it was first staged in the 90s, Metro Manila Pride (then known as LGBT Pride and Manila Pride) has been a labor of love. A very small group of committed volunteers keep the pride spirit alive all for the love of the community. But now Pride needs your help.

Metro Manila Pride Festival - Rainbow Hands Heart

Pride has always been free to attend. We work hard to keep it this way because we believe that everybody should be able to enjoy this safe space.

But this has involved shelling out our own money and even taking out personal loans just to keep Pride running. What little corporate sponsorship we receive is always used to pay for Pride’s debts and taxes.

This year, we’ve exhausted all our options but we’re still coming up short.

We need your help, mga mahal.

Why it’s important to help

Last year alone, we had close to 3,000 attendees at the Pride March. This is more than twice the usual number of attendees we have. This number took us completely by surprise but it was a good surprise!

It didn’t stop there. In the coming months, we had more and more people messaging us privately asking for advice, letting us know that they were thankful for the space we provided for them offline and online, and telling us how moved they were by our activities–especially the Pride March.

At the Pride March, you hear and see our issues being raised by the very people who experience them. Issues that we rarely ever hear about because it’s not deemed important enough by media.

At the Pride March you come in alone, or with your friends, or with your family and be amongst throngs of strangers who want you to be able to live and love freely and fearlessly. For many people, this kind of freedom and love is not something available to them in their daily lives.

The Pride March and the entire Pride Festival belongs to all of us. And for all of us, Pride needs to happen.

What we need and what we have

We need to raise PhP 184, 702.00 in the next 12 days for us to be able to successfully hold Pride.

These funds will go towards:

  • Securing our marching permits around Manila
  • Renting the Lapu-Lapu Shrine in Luneta Park
  • Feeding our 60+ volunteers and our volunteer performers
  • Sponsoring the Home for the Golden Gays lolas (many of whom have never been to Pride!)
  • Paying for lights, sounds, tents, and electricity
  • Paying for materials and equipment we need to run the event
  • A donation for the Philippine Red Cross who will run our first-aid booth and the police officers who will help keep us safe while we’re marching

What happens if we don’t raise the money

It will be difficult, but we will push through with Pride. We have always found a way in the past, this year is no different. Pride will happen, no matter what.

One last thing

We understand that not everybody is able to contribute monetarily. But we would appreciate it if you shared this post across social media and to your circles. If your company can be a sponsor, please send them this post and ask them to get in touch with us. Every bit helps.

The Pride Festival is our biggest safe space. It is a beacon of hope for those in the closet, an expression of courage for marchers who advocate for rights, an avenue for empowerment for those who experience it for the first time, and a safe space for all. In the face of the life-threatening situations that LGBT+ people endure daily, it is clear that the community needs Pride. Please #LetLoveIn and help us make it happen.

With much love and gratefulness,

Nicky H. Castillo & Loreen Ordoño
