The Active Vista Human Rights Film Festival organized by DAKILA and in partnership with Metro Manila Pride, presents “Margarita, With A Straw.” Showing on February 27 (Saturday) at Cine Adarna in UP Diliman, this is a film with “a lot of heart and powerful performances” about the life and coming out story of a young bisexual women with cerebral palsy.

Standing out among a sea of cookie-cutter queer characters in film, “Margarita, With A Straw” talks about the life of Laila, a bisexual woman of color with cerebral palsy, who leaves her home in India looking for a new life in New York. In this process, she finds love with Khanum, a university student and activist who happens to be a blind lesbian woman.

The story follows Laila and Khanum’s journey from New York to India, and Laila’s journey in coming terms with her sexuality and coming out to her mother.

Variety says of “Margarita, With A Straw”:

Striking just the right tone, “Margarita, With a Straw” admirably treats this relationship as it treats everything else: with a respectful yet light touch that avoids any conspicuous “social issue” soapboxing, being just one more element of personal discovery for a character who’s figuring out her place in the world. The same approach is taken to the general idea of raging hormones in a disabled person (whom much of society would prefer to regard in sexless terms), and to Laila’s assumed vulnerability roaming Manhattan.
