So, you’ve decided to march in Metro Manila Pride this year. Congratulations! Pride is an annual fest of fabulousness, acceptance, love, and – naturally – pride in one’s gender and sexuality. But the ever-present question asked at every event keeps niggling at your mind: what do I wear?
Not to worry, hypothetical person. I’m here to help.
Are you the type of person who enjoys looking at costumes and theme-wear rather than participating yourself? Prefer yourself firmly on the comfortable and practical side of the fence? No biggie, brah – glitter is uncomfortable as hell. You may be loud and proud but you’d also like to be footloose and sweat-free, am I right? I got you, pal.
The trick is sticking to lightweight, breathable fabrics in white or pastels. Shorts, too, are your best friend. You can’t go wrong with shorts, basic tees, and sneakers.
Want to spice it up a little? Then you need to try a romper, my friend. All the punch and breeziness of a sundress, without the danger of an accidental upskirt. (Sorry men / people who prefer to dress masculinely, try as I might, your friendly neighborhood article writer just could not find the equivalent of a romper for masculine attire.)
Oh, wait, you don’t want to show too much skin? I hear you! Cotton joggers cover you up just fine, but are nowhere near as heavy and unwieldy as a pair of jeans.
Don’t forget comfy shoes!
It’s a Pride Parade, you wanna show off your colors! I totally get that, buddy. Want to shed the neutrals and go all-out? The perfect way to do that is to coordinate your outfit around the flag of your choice!
Ah, rainbows. What on earth would a Pride Parade be without rainbows? You, my friend, have a lot of leeway color-wise. Go nuts. ROYGBIV your world. The mall is your oyster.
HOLLA AT ME, MY BI BABIES. Pink, purple, and blue is a bomb color scheme. Who says color-blocking is a thing of the past?
Black, gray, white, and purple. My ace pals, have you got a chic palette of colors to choose from! Simply put together a black, gray, and white outfit, add a splash of purple somewhere, and you’re all set.
The pansexual pride colors are sweet as candy, and if you’ve got the personality to match, you’ll enjoy this outfit. Shine bright like a diamond in pink, yellow, and blue!
You, my friend, are in luck. Pink, light blue, and white are exactly the kinds of pastels you want to be wearing in hot, muggy weather. Go you!
All Out Pride
Are these all too tame for you? Do you want to tell the world “I’m queer, I’m here, and I’m an actual glitter-rainbow-feather unicorn?” Well, it’s pride! You can be as outrageous as you want with your attire and be celebrated for it!
THE HAPPY MEDIUM
Maybe you don’t want to be a veritable rainbow, but you still wanna show your pride in your identity? Accessories are the way to go!
Still have nothing to wear to the Metro Manila Pride Festival?
Well, you’re in luck! Come to the Proud Street Fair at the Lapu-Lapu Monument and get your hands on limited edition Metro Manila Pride swag! The Proud Street runs from 2PM-8PM. There will be other awesome rainbow swag to be had at the Fair so come early before they run out!
Be prepared for any weather! Bring an umbrella, a raincoat, or flip-flops or boots in case it pours.
That said, make sure to slather on the sunscreen just in case the sun’s out in full force. Let love in, but keep out the bad UV rays.
Emphasis on the ‘march’ in Pride March, guys. First aid will be available but an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure!
You’re all set! See you at Pride, my lovelies!
